- We are looking for a fairly new travel trailer with wheelchair lift. We prefer something in the 25' to 30'…[Read more]
Looks like a great website, just have to get used to navigating it, but a great job. Merle
Here’s some accessibility info for wheelchair people who occasionally stay in a motel. I don’t have any trouble transferring straight across, but when the mattress is several inches higher than my wheelchair seat I’m in trouble. Turns out that Motel 6’s typically have mattresses that are a “reasonable” height, unlike most of the other motel/hotel chains. We stayed in several Motel 6’s across the west last year and they all worked well. The chain’s reputation in the past has not been very good, but it seems a lot of them have been remodeled and we were pleased with the ones we stayed in. And, they are dog-friendly, a plus for us.
After our last stay, in Tempe AZ, I wrote a note of appreciation to the manager, encouraging them to keep their beds accessible for wheelchair folks. Here’s the response:
“I will share your comments with our team. I am sure that this feedback will serve as an encouragement to all our staff as we strive to continuously improve the quality of our services.
“The mattress in the room you stayed in is actually one of the new mattresses that they are using at the remodeled locations. I really appreciate detailed feedback because it truly helps me understand what all our guests like or dislike. This is something that I never personally considered, but now it is something I’ll always keep in mind and I will share with other Managers.”
And, their prices are among the lowest in the industry.
Hi thank you for having me here. I’m new and want to find people like you all here. I been searching for a club or something like this for quite sometime now and today I found this one. I will pay my dues and obey all rules I’m total disabled cant walk but first let me tell you a little bit about myself I’m from Ohio and I’m a old man 54 yrs. old and anyways I stopped to help some guy whom I thought was hurt along skullfork road in Ohio and this guy was drunk and passed out. I didn’t know at the time and he ran me over crushing me and dragged me up the road and tried to bottem me off from under that van and my legs got wrapped around the drive shaft somehow and felt like I was cut in half.Anyways I was left to die with 64 broken bones and this was July 20th,2007 and now I cant walk. I will post my small website for anyone who wants to view it and read my story and or just to see it.My wife ran off and left me with my best friend after I got hurt. I sure do miss him too. anyways uhh I hope to meet some good people here. Thank you all and looking forward to staying for along time.Have a blessed day my new friends, Thank you Dale
Come join us. Next rally is in South Dakota.
Thanks for the info on Motel 6 Ed. Will pass along. We just did a Travel Seminar at the Post Polio Health International conference in St. Louis. We had about 130 people attend and talked about advantages of RVing and about our Club. Many were very interested. Look forward to our rally.
Hope to spend more time figuring out how to navigate all the social media so can be more involved.
I am a paraplegic. I live in Pascagoula Mississippi. I like to travel and I’m thinking about getting a wheelchair accessible RV that I can drive. I would like to be able to get in one and sit behind the wheel, to see if I would feel comfortable driving it. Is there anyone within a couple hours of where I live, that has a handicap accessible RV that I can come look at?
I don’t know of any members in Mississippi (there are 3 members). Contact RV shops around you.
Rick,
I am a polio patient from Ms but now live in Ar. I’m planning to sell my farm and move back home to Ms. I want to use my hometown as a base from which to travel in a class c motorhome.
I’m writing you because of location. Did you buy an rv and are you traveling? Please contact me. I need all the information I can get about rving with a challenge.
My number is 479-217-0711.
I am 71 and have arthritis and a bad hip. Want to take up rving but am worried that I will not be able to get down and connect waste water hookups. Otherwise I feel I could manage. I would appreciate any advice from your members about RV models, systems, etc. from your special needs perspective that might help me make an informed choice. Thanks for being here.

I read your note on the Handicap Travel Club website. I am a 63 year old paraplegic. I have a home in Florida and NH. I also have a 40 foot diesel RV. I am looking for someone to do some traveling with me. I don’t think I could be a full time RVer but I would like to see the United states by taking extended trips in my RV. Someone to share the trips with would be great. I am looking for someone who is like minded to enjoy the companionship of traveling and exploring this great country we live in.
If this sounds of interest to you or to someone you may know please respond so we can explore the possibilities.

I was so happy to read about your site. I never knew something existed of people with handicapping conditions travelling and enjoying the great outdoor life. So excited to see that you are able to find people that hold your same interest. I am not handicapped, but my daughter has an autoimmune disease that leaves her unable to walk. She is otherwise very independent. She is in still quite young; not yet 40. She would love to travel, but our 5th wheel is not accessible. So I am learning from this site on how she could do this with people her age. Any ideas, please let me know. Are you able to buy a travel RV that is handicap accessible? I have checked into a few, but I have not seen any. I have always thought that there needs to be more handicapped accessible hotels, cabins and services since I have to look out for my daughter. It was a pleasure looking at all your comments!

Hey Guys I need help. I’m 28 and I became disabled at a young age and i have no credit history. I’m tired of renting an apartment I want to be able to live abroad but too many waiting list and I want to travel and see the world or at least the U.S. Can someone help me make my dreams happen. I have no life sitting at home all day. I was looking at a class b rv. Please email me at wjmluvgod@gmail.com
We are confused by the dates of postings in member and wagon master seem to be out of sequenc, any possibility of posting 2018 posts first to older posts last? We have been looking for RV motor home for several years. One company was willing to accept large down payment less than a month before he went bankrupt. We would have been last to receive our money if any was left after all his debts were paid. Employees had no notice of job loss. Last month we hired 2 RV inspectors. One in FL. was refused by owner as not wanting his Newmar inspected. He has now traveled to Myrtyl Beach and then to NY. Second RV inspector was hired along with hired RV driving instructor. The Newmar had only 9000 miles on it so we drove and stayed at La Quinta. The Newmar had not been winterized and water from shower flooded the pavement outside of RV. Wood ants were marching up power cord eating their way up walls into ceilings and dropped on bed. The RV was dirty owners had just moved out leaving their dirt and grandchildren’s candy to lay for new owner s to clean. The RV inspector Tim Pautsch saved us $135,000. The driving instructor could not teach because the drivers chair wiggled and after 1 1/2 miles gave a leg cramp in inspectors leg holding chair down. Both Newmar owners said they had many offers to buy their RVs. The last one w as honorable and said he would fix all that was found to be wrong. We are now thinking of buying from Winnebago but do not understand the advantage of buying from factory or buying from the RV dealer 1 mile from factory. Does anyone have opinion about advantages? We’d love to visit Wagon master in person or by phone and learn about the great things he’s done for people with disabilities. We live in TX too. We are both disabled because of polio. Ken, has not walked for 67 years. I walk off and on but currently was hurt by fall 4/15 and by semi air sucuctioning my body into our van moving my back surgeries at L3-L4. I’ m hoping it’s not permanent as I’m back to using walker and wheelchair. I was a RV Recreation Resort Director and Ken was a Entomologist. Bless you all!
